MERDEKA.."what does it means to me"

Wishing all Malaysians including the Prime Minister and his staff a very happy and auspicious National Day! Congratulations and may Malaysia continue to be prosperous, harmonious and dynamic. I would like to take this opportunity to also remember our leaders from the past to the present, the fair and hardworking people who made a lot of sacrifices for Malaysia to become an example of a progressive and fair nation to the rest of the world. Malaysia Boleh! Congratulations! Bless you all!

By that, Hari Merdeka or Independence Day is a national day of Malaysia commemorating the independence of the Federation of Malaya from British colonial rule, celebrated on August 31. In a wider context, it is to celebrate the formation of Malaysia.
The effort for independence was spearheaded by Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, the first Prime Minister of Malaysia, who led a delegation of ministers and political leaders of Malaya in negotiations with the British in London for Merdeka, or independence along with the first president of the Malayan Chinese Association (MCA) Tun Dato Sir Tan Cheng Lock and fifth President of Malaysian Indian Congress Tun V.T. Sambanthan. Once it became increasingly clear that the Communist threat posed during the Malayan Emergency was petering out, agreement was reached on February 8, 1956, for Malaya to gain independence from the British Empire. However, for a number of logistical and administrative reasons, it was decided that the official proclamation of independence would only be made the next year, on August 31, 1957, at Stadium Merdeka (Independence Stadium), in Kuala Lumpur.

This golden day is very special for me.It is such a blessing as I now realise the advantages we had growing up in a peaceful multicultural country, that give us the opportunity to learn and practise each other's beliefs, languages and lifestyles. In the process, it creates a level of openness that most of us, if not everyone, are able to accept and respect each other, just as we are.We must be proud of that. I am one of those lucky ones to be born after Independence. Our rich soil and environment have provided us with plenty of wealth and opportunities. I urge the youth of today to look back at history and use it to further enhance our achievements as we are the hope and the leaders of tomorrow. Lastly, we shall be proud of the achievements of our country in whatever field we ventures in.

So, that's all from me. Happy Merdeka Day to my lovely country and all Malaysians. May Malaysia continue on with the peaceful journey so that all residents of Malaysia will be able to continue to live happily in a harmonious and healthy environment.Merdeka! Merdeka! Merdeka!
